Emma Benz

Emma Benz is a watercolour artist with a background in Painting Restoration. Emma trained at the Courtauld Institute of Art before working as Chief Paintings Restorer at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Wales as well as working at the National Museum of Wales and ICN in the Netherlands. Emma has since returned to her first love of painting but continues to use her extensive knowledge of artists materials and techniques in her work.

Emma works exclusively in the medium of watercolour as she enjoys it’s immediacy and the range of effects that she can achieve by simply using water and paint. Emma uses specialist Japanese watercolours on archival watercolour paper and utilises her gilding expertise by creating complex shapes in 23k gold leaf alongside passages of vivid watercolour.

Her formative years growing up by the Welsh coast still influences her work today through the tonal range of blues and greens, with the real gold leaf resembling the warmth and brilliance of the sun reflecting on the sea.
