Jo Ellis

Based in London

Jo Ellis was born in Hong Kong and moved to the United Kingdom in 1970. She has been travelling around the world ever since, painting and exhibiting while living in New Zealand, Sudan, Tanzania, Pakistan, South Korea, Egypt and Bosnia & Herzegovina. The artist now lives in London with her family.

Jo studied traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy in Hong Kong, which she developed further during four years in Korea. Following this, she moved on to study fine art and design in London. Her recent works were inspired by places she has visited during her travels and her love of old towns and cities. Jo enjoys using various mediums to create textured surfaces, and finds that mixing both contemporary and traditional methods and styles often results in unusual interpretations of familiar subjects.

Jo has held solo exhibitions in Seoul, Cairo, Alexandria, Sarajevo, Florida and New York and exhibited in London at The Mall Gallery, Alexander Llewellyn Gallery, Chelsea Old Town Hall, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Banqueting House, Orleans House Gallery, The Stable Gallery, Richmond Town Hall and Kingston Museum.
