Kerry Hastings

Kerry has spent the last year developing a new body of work. She has created this work as an emotional response to landscape, to the shifting seasons, the weather and to the moods and emotions that are created by elements. Kerry is a Scottish artist living in London, although she often returns to the west of Scotland, where she is from, and finds the dramatic and ancient scenery a great influence, as it was when she was a child.

Once Kerry has completed the building of her vessels with big flat coils of clay, joined by pulling up and together, she scrapes and smooths the clay until the form is finished.  This is a slow and mindful process and by the time the form is ready for the application of the slip, Kerry has a good idea of how she will tackle the surface.

Speaking about her work, Kerry says: “I brush on layer upon layer of coloured porcelain slip which I colour with varying percentages of oxides such as cobalt, manganese, copper, red and black iron oxide so each piece is unique.  An ash glaze is then applied in layers also by brush for a smooth, milky opacity.”
