Cheese tasting 2019

cambridge contemporary artComment

We were so pleased to see such great turnout for our cheese tasting event in December. As last year, our friends from Meadows did not disappoint with their fantastic selection of exquisite cheeses for us to try.

In the gallery, we deal with artists from all over the U.K. At Meadows, Suzannah and Emese work with food producers from all over the country. They rely on the quality of produce from their suppliers just as much we do on the skill and craft of our makers.  We see so many overlaps in the way we work and the way we think.

We are very proud that we can work with open minded and considerate businesses like them. Here is Meadows’ in their own words.

We love our indie suppliers; they make us what we are and our menu what it is. So, know for sure that when you grab lunch from us, you not only support us in doing our best but our suppliers as well. A large percentage of our ingredients are certified organic and where our smaller producers are not certified, we know they use organic ingredients or practice organic and sustainable principles in their farming & production. This is anxiety-free eating. No meat & no industrialised dairy, no danger to bees, no stress to soil, no modern slavery or other hideous working conditions for fellow human beings. Just good vibes people, seriously good vibes and all in a simple and affordable lunch plate.

Salary: £9.30 per hour

Closing date for application forms: 5th February

Interview Dates: mornings of 12th, 13th and 14th February

Start date: 5th March

When hiring a new member of staff, we look for a friendly, approachable person who will be able to give guidance to a customer looking for a particular work of art, discuss how it has been made and be able to gauge what the customer is looking for. You will need to be comfortable talking to customers about their preferences, advising them of what may be a good piece to buy and have the confidence to recommend alternatives when they aren’t sure about your choice.

You will be responsible in ensuring that you deliver excellent customer service in the gallery, on the phone and over email, alongside taking payments, wrapping purchases, and constantly monitoring and tidying the displays.

To keep the business running smoothly you will help to close the till at the end of the day, maintain accurate sales sheets as well as creating price labels, cleaning, dusting, painting walls and plinths to keep the gallery looking smart. Once you are trained, you will be confident in using excel and a POS till.

The displays in the gallery and craft shop change regularly, showing artists from all stages in their career. You may be part of the team that hangs the new exhibition and meets the artist(s) delivering their work.

We pride ourselves in promoting our artists extensively through our website and social media pages, this requires very good attention to detail to ensure that artists get the best possible exposure.

As both premises are open to the public 7 days a week, you will need to be vigilant and security minded at all times.

You must be flexible with working hours, we plan the rotas one month in advance but occasionally offer hours at short notice to cover staff sickness and other eventualities which may arise in both our premises, Cambridge Contemporary Art (Trinity Street) and Cambridge Contemporary Crafts (Bene’t Street).

We are a small team of staff and are looking for the right person to join our team. This person will be conscientious, enthusiastic, able to work in a team and also by themselves.

The regular working hours are Thursdays 1.30-5.30pm (10-6.30 at busy times of year), going up to 3 days a week to cover for staff holidays, sickness cover etc..

This position would ideally suit someone who is self-employed or freelance.

Please email us at admin@cambridgegallery.co.uk for an application form.
